Comparing the Effectiveness of Working Memory Training and Sternberg's Successful Intelligence on Academic Performance and Social Competence of Students

Abstract :
Given the mutual influence of academic performance and social competence on each other and the quality of life of students, targeted interventions can play an important role in improving these two variables. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to compare the effectiveness of working memory training and Sternberg's successful intelligence on academic performance and social competence of high school students. The research method was a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest design and a follow-up period. The statistical population in this study was female first-year high school students in Tehran's regions 1and3. According to available sampling, 51students were selected and randomly assigned to three groups of 17 (control, first experiment, second experiment). The experimental groups underwent working memory training and Sternberg's successful intelligence interventions. The social competence questionnaires of Parandin(2006) andPham&Taylor(1999) were the research instruments. The research data were analyzed using repeated measures analysis of variance in SPSS-26. The findings showed that the effectiveness of successful intelligence and working memory on academic performance and social competence is different. The adjusted means showed that in both variables, the effectiveness of successful intelligence training is higher because the average of social competence and academic performance is higher than the working memory group. The results of the Bonferroni post hoc test also showed that this effectiveness and its difference continued in the two-month follow-up period (P<0.001).
