Abstract :
The present study aimed to determine the relationship between body dysmorphic disorder symptoms and social anxiety symptoms, through self-esteem. Therefore, 378 students from University of Tabriz were selected using a multi-stage cluster random sampling method. Data were collected using the Connor Social Anxiety Scale (SPIN), Rosenberg self-esteem scale (RSES), and Littleton body image concern inventory (BICI) questionnaires. Data were analyzed by structural equation modeling using AMOS24 software. Results indicated that the measured model had a good fit with the theoretical model. Furthermore, findings showed a significant positive relationship between body dysmorphic disorder symptoms and social anxiety, as well as significant negative relationships between body dysmorphic disorder symptoms and self-esteem, as well as between self-esteem and social anxiety. hence, it can be concluded that a decrease in self-esteem levels in individuals with body dysmorphic disorder symptoms may lead to the onset or exacerbation of social anxiety disorder, and by increasing self-esteem levels in these individuals, the onset and intensification of social anxiety disorder can be prevented.
