Abstract :
This study aimed to determine the relationship between emotion regulation strategies and premenstrual syndrome (PMS) with the mediating role of cognitive flexibility. A sample of 227 women and girls with regular menstrual cycles was selected in 1402 through convenience sampling. Data collection instruments included the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ), the Premenstrual Symptoms Screening Tool (PSST), and the Cognitive Flexibility Inventory (CFI) by Dennis and Vanderwal. Pearson correlation results indicated a significant positive relationship between the emotional suppression strategy and psychological symptoms of PMS. Furthermore, significant negative relationships were observed between cognitive reappraisal strategy and both physical symptoms and total PMS scores. There were also significant negative correlations between both emotion regulation strategies and cognitive flexibility, as well as between problem-solving processing and psychological symptoms. Additionally, perception of controllability and total cognitive flexibility scores showed significant negative correlations with PMS symptoms (excluding physical symptoms). Path analysis revealed that cognitive flexibility plays a significant mediating role in the relationship between the emotional suppression strategy and PMS. However, for the cognitive reappraisal strategy, the mediating role was not significant, and this strategy exerted a direct effect on PMS. Cognitive flexibility serves as a significant mediator in the link between emotional suppression and PMS in women; however, it does not significantly mediate the relationship between cognitive reappraisal and PMS, where the latter only directly influences premenstrual symptoms.
