The relationship between dark personality traits and addiction to virtual social networks with the mediating role of coping styles

Abstract :
This study aimed to examine the structural model of the relationship between dark personality traits and addiction to virtual social networks with the mediating role of coping. The research was descriptive-correlational in nature. The statistical population included all secondary school students in the city of Khalkhal in 2024. The sample consisted of 300 students, selected using cluster sampling, considering incomplete and flawed questionnaires as well as the potential for participant drop-out. Data were collected using the Social Media Addiction Questionnaire, the Dark Personality Traits Scale (DTPM), and the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS). Data analysis was performed using Pearson correlation and path analysis in SPSS version 26 and AMOS version 21. The findings showed that dark personality traits such as Machiavellianism and sadism, along with emotion-oriented and avoidant coping styles, had a positive and significant effect on social media addiction, while problem-oriented coping style had a negative and significant effect. The analysis of indirect effects revealed that the effect of Machiavellianism through problem-oriented and avoidant coping styles, and social cynicism and narcissism through emotion-oriented coping, and sadism through avoidant coping on social media addiction were significant. The results indicate that dark personality traits directly and indirectly affect social media addiction through various coping styles. These findings suggest that individuals with dark personality traits and emotion-oriented and avoidant coping styles are more at risk of social media addiction
